Srebrenica Memorial Week 2014

We are proud to bring you details of Srebrenica Memorial Week 2014. Local and national events begin on 7 July, running through to the EU-designated Srebrenica Memorial Day on 11 July.
Last year was the first year that the UK held a Srebrenica Memorial Day. The concept of a memorial day to mark the Srebrenica genocide in 1995 came out of a European Parliament resolution in 2009, and Remembering Srebrenica is proud to be our country’s organiser of these acts of remembrance and honour.
We ran a single, large-scale event at Lancaster House last year, before which Prime Minister David Cameron hosted the survivors at Number 10 in an hour-long meeting. At the Lancaster House reception that evening, the Foreign Secretary William Hague provided the keynote address, and was joined by figures from across the political spectrum, including the Rt Hon Eric Pickles, Rt Hon Sayeeda Warsi, Rt Hon Hilary Benn,  and Lord Paddy Ashdown, as well as Cardinal Vincent Nichols who all spoke along with four survivors. This year, we not only have a similar event planned for Lancaster House, but also a reception hosted at Bute House in Edinburgh, Scotland, and an event in Wales.
We will be bringing four survivors – the Mothers of Srebrenica – over to the UK to share their personal testimonies, providing a deeply moving introduction for many and reminder for others of the terrible legacy of the Srebrenica genocide.
Joining our national events will be more than 10 local Memorial Week events, many of which are being organised by former Lessons from Srebrenica delegates. These are taking place countrywide from Stoke to Luton, and Blackburn to London in a range of venues from local meeting rooms, council offices and police stations to Blackburn Cathedral. In attendance will be MPs, key faith leaders, local school children, and if World Cup commitments allow, Bosnian footballer, Asmir Begović.
If you would like to arrange a local event as part of Srebrenica Memorial Week then please contact us on: info@srebrenica.org.uk or call 0121 285 0440.
